Our Pathway to Net Zero | Rolls-Royce

Alert

A new era of sustainable power

We are placing the transition to net zero at the heart of everything that we do.

Pioneers of power

At Rolls-Royce, we have a long, proud history as pioneers of the power that enables the modern world to function.

The climate crisis means the way humans use power must become compatible with net zero carbon. We believe technology can be a force for good, and that, as the world emerges from the pandemic, sustainable economic growth is possible. For us, the transition to net zero is both a societal imperative and the greatest commercial opportunity of our time.

Challenging Times
We must limit global warming to 1.5°C

Power generation, transport and the built environment will be key. These are the very sectors in which reducing emissions is hardest.

Find out about the challenges we face and the breakthroughs we need

Committed to the challenge

In a new podcast series, ‘Powering Net Zero’, Rachael Everard, Head of Sustainability, discusses our commitments to deliver against our sustainability targets and the actions needed to get us, and the industries in which we operate, there.

Destination net zero
Our customers use our products and services in industries such as aviation, shipping and energy generation.

These are among the industries where reducing carbon emissions is hardest. This makes our innovation in these sectors all the more important in enabling the global transition to net zero. Our pioneering work can accelerate technological breakthroughs and have positive impacts across the key areas of transport, energy and the built environment.

We have already pledged to reduce emissions from our own operations to net zero by 2030, and to play a leading role in enabling the sectors in which we operate to reach net zero by 2050. Now, we are now laying out our technology pathway and setting clear short-term targets to show how we will achieve those goals.

More on our new net zero targets

2023

all our in production commercial aero engines and most popular diesel engines to be compatible with sustainable fuels

2030

our new products to be compatible with net zero operation

2030

a 35% cut in lifetime emissions of new sold products from our Power Systems business

2050

all our products to be compatible with net zero operation

Our emissions footprint

We are committed to ensuring our products can be used in ways that are compatible with net zero.

MORE ON OUR EMISSIONS FOOTPRINT

A time for pioneers
We believe technologies can be tools for positive change as the world emerges from the pandemic. Global economic growth can be compatible with a net zero carbon future.

However, no individual company, sector or technology has all the answers. That’s why we are forging partnerships across borders, industries and technologies to seek out - and scale - solutions that can get us to net zero.

We are also stepping up our advocacy for policies that can accelerate action to drive down emissions. Pioneering sustainable, net zero power now sits at the very heart of our strategy, innovation plans and growth agenda.

The societal need is great. The business imperative is clear. There are few companies better placed than Rolls-Royce to pioneer the vital solutions we need to create a net zero future.

FIND OUT HOW WE ARE BECOMING A NET ZERO COMPANY

Powering sustainable growth
We will firstly ensure that our products can be used in ways that are compatible with net zero emissions.

Our teams have already made considerable progress by, for example, testing lower carbon alternative fuels, and developing advanced engine designs to further increase fuel efficiency.

We are also pioneering breakthrough technologies to decarbonise the complex, carbon-intensive sectors in which we operate and power sustainable economic growth. Our innovation is taking us into new areas with significant growth opportunities, from all-electric urban air mobility and regional aviation, to hybrid-electric systems, fuel cells, microgrids and small modular nuclear reactors.
