Icon dynamic positioning control

Icon DP is a range of dynamic positioning (DP) systems from Rolls-Royce. The systems comply with the IMO requirements to DP Class 1, 2 and 3. All positioning systems use the Rolls-Royce common control platform architecture and are of modular design. Icon DP systems comprise one or several operator stations, control cabinet, network and power supplies. The cabinet contains computers and input/ output (I/O) modules for interfacing to sensors, position reference systems, thrusters, rudders, power system and other DP related equipment. Simplicity and proximity are unique design principles incorporated in the Icon system design. The goal is to simplify DP operations and to bring the system physically closer to the operator, thus increasing both operator performance and overall operational safety. Triple redundant solutions are standard for Icon DP2 and DP3 systems. The two-out-of-three voting principle ensures enhanced safety and reliability compared to basic Class rules.

Dynamic positioning

Benefit from our experience in DP upgrades and minimise costs compared to new build.

Dynamic positioning

We have developed a number of dynamic positioning upgrade solutions to fit your vessel’s requirements. Benefit from our experience in DP upgrades and minimise costs compared to new build. We have the capability to deliver from preliminary study to commissioning.

Dynamic positioning is the capability a vessel has to automatically maintain its position or heading by using its propellers, rudders and thrusters. This is a major contributor to safe and accurate operations.

Virtually any vessel with thrust equipment can be upgraded to a DP specification range from POSCON Joystick to ICON DP2. Effective pre-engineering by Rolls-Royce and planning of the installation will ensure minimum down time.

The Rolls-Royce positioning product family includes:

  • Poscon Independent Joystick
  • Icon DP1
  • Icon DP2
  • Icon DP3.

Customer benefits
  • Improved positioning capability – select from Rolls-Royce range of positioning products to give you the level of positioning you need.
  • Greater earning potential – New operating requirements demand better systems, having the latest DP system installed broadens the range of operations the vessel can undertake.
  • Enhanced safety – Simplicity and proximity are unique design principles. And the goal is to simplify DP operations and increase both operator performance and overall operational safety.
  • Cost effective – A DP upgrade can transform vessel capabilities and will ensure it meets the latest regulations for a modest investment. A much more cost-effective alternative to new build.
  • Easy interface - Our intuitive graphical user interfaces allow first time users to navigate with ease. Try this out at your nearest Rolls-Royce training centre.
Unique operation and station flexibility

Bridge integration is possible thanks to the compact design of the main components. Dynamic positioning systems use space effective operational devices and touch screen displays. The space saving system design provides flexibility in arranging the DP system into new or existing consoles.

All positioning systems use common controls architecture and are of modular design, providing a uniform, well-presented environment on the bridge for improved safety.

Our common architecture and design philosophy provides proven standard modules as building blocks to configure a customised solution to meet the specific operational requirements of each vessel.

The graphical user interface (GUI) displays the DP scene in 3D with the relevant information on vessel position/movement and thruster status/operation. Information on power bus, sensors, reference systems and other relevant information can be actuated via the touch screen interface.

Unified Bridge

Integrated bridge system ergonomically designed to increase operator performance & operational safety.

Unified Bridge

Our systems include work-stations for navigation, manoeuvring, dynamic positioning, anchor-handling and deck operations, and machinery controls.

They are built up from modules and standardised components using the Rolls-Royce common controls platform (all systems work together via the Rolls-Royce integrated network where information and control signals are exchanged safely, and the integrity of each system is secured), and are tailored to the ship giving the user access to the underlying ship systems. The intuitive design combined with common look and feel menus increase both operator performance and overall operational safety.

Key features
  • Multifunctional displays allow the operator to choose which information is to be collected and presented together
  • Important and critical information displayed at all times for simple and safe operation
  • Control levers ergonomically placed to allow operator to work sitting or standing, with all information clearly displayed on touch screens
  • The Operator’s Chair incorporates the best in ergonomic design – controls and interactive screens may be located in chair armrests, chairs can be supplied as part of a bridge system or as an individual product.

Customer Product Training

Offering blended teaching combining e-learning, simulator training and more.

Customer Product Training

Ensuring that your crew are properly and thoroughly trained will reduce operational risk and downtime plus maximise return on asset investment.

It also enables you to meet regulatory standards, improve crew safety and retain key personnel. In our state of the art training centres qualified and experienced trainers are able to provide your crew with practical training tailored to suit your products, systems and operational requirements. Our instructors can also train your crew on-board their vessel.

From hands on experience on full sized products in our training workshops, to experiencing real life scenarios in our virtual reality simulators all of our courses are designed to focus on safe and efficient operation and maintenance of your Rolls-Royce equipment.

Regional training centres:

  • Ålesund, Norway
  • Niteroi, Brazil
  • Singapore
E-learning

This type of solution is ideal for course preparation, where the participant is exposed to theoretical training for fundamental basic knowledge, with e-assessments throughout the module to assist in measuring the participants understanding of the basics.

Classroom

This type of solution is ideal for theoretical training, especially for larger groups. It goes through detailed systems overview including drawings and functionality.

Workshop/technical room

This type of solution is ideal for practical training with focus on maintenance and troubleshooting on actual products. This type of training used together with classroom training can provide a holistic view of complete systems.

Simulators

This type of solution is ideal for operator training where simulations of real life scenarios occurring at sea expose crew to dangerous situations in a controlled environment. They can be configured for systems or stand-alone operations like subsea, bridge, crane or winch operations.

  • DP simulator

Practice manoeuvring around an oil platform in all types of sea conditions. Learn from realistic situations using operator stations arranged as on the vessel.

  • Winch simulator

Enhanced with a winch remote control and monitoring system, the latest winch configurations helps crew practice and learn how to handle complex winch operations.

  • Seismic simulator

Realistic training on deploying the streamer cable and deflector. Simulating the operator’s tasks on the back deck of a seismic vessel, using the control system together with the radio remote.

Spares

We understand the importance of having the right parts, available in the right place, at the right time.

Spares

We understand the importance of having the right parts, available in the right place, at the right time. Working in close collaboration with our customers we have now developed a Spares Transformation Programme (STP) to further improve our customer response times.

This programme will streamline our operations to reduce lead-times, increase spares availability, and allow customers to track the status of their spares delivery in real-time.

To support the programme, we have opened a dedicated Marine Parts Service Centre (MPSC) to process spares quotations and orders centrally. This is underpinned by an improved logistics and IT infrastructure, which will enable us to deliver high-quality support to our customers, wherever they are in the world.
