Bergen Engine Exchange Pool

Time and labour saving alternative to conventional engine servicing

Bergen Engine Exchange Pool

Limited time for scheduled dockings, less experienced engineering staff can mean there is often less time and on board resources available for engine maintenance or overhauls.

Rolls-Royce developed the exchange pool as a time and labour saving alternative to conventional engine servicing.

Partial engine overhauls can be completed in a much shorter ‘window’ as they require fewer man-hours to complete. Individual cylinder heads for example take around 12 hours to overhaul; using exchange units on a 9-cylinder engine overhaul will save around 100 man-hours.

Customer benefits

By understanding your requirements we can arrange for a container of exchange units to be available at your selected location on the specified date and time. Using the exchange pool has many benefits:

  • Less downtime / fewer man-hours – No stripping or repair of sub assemblies.
  • Flexibility – repairs or partial overhauls can be done during your next voyage.
  • Consistent quality – All units overhauled to Rolls-Royce standards with full warranty. No surprises – you know the cost at the start.
  • Reduced spares inventory – fewer spares and tools required on board.
Flexibility to suit your needs

There is a lot of flexibility built into the programme, as components do not have to be collected and dropped off at the same location. For example, a vessel sailing from Singapore to the Gulf of Mexico can collect a set of cylinder heads from Singapore – have the work undertaken in transit – and the heads dropped off in Galveston on arrival. Advise your Rolls-Royce service centre of your requirements, or we will work with you to establish your best overhaul option.
Supply & fit – Exchange components can be provided on a supply and fit basis, making engine overhauls and maintenance quick and hassle-free.

As each component has its own price structure, the local Rolls-Royce centre can normally fix costs that include labour, as long as the returned units are repairable. All exchange units carry a full warranty for additional peace of mind.

E-learning

This type of solution is ideal for course preparation, where the participant is exposed to theoretical training for fundamental basic knowledge, with e-assessments throughout the module to assist in measuring the participants understanding of the basics.

Classroom

This type of solution is ideal for theoretical training, especially for larger groups. It goes through detailed systems overview including drawings and functionality.

Workshop/technical room

This type of solution is ideal for practical training with focus on maintenance and troubleshooting on actual products. This type of training used together with classroom training can provide a holistic view of complete systems.

Simulators

This type of solution is ideal for operator training where simulations of real life scenarios occurring at sea expose crew to dangerous situations in a controlled environment. They can be configured for systems or stand-alone operations like subsea, bridge, crane or winch operations.

  • DP simulator

Practice manoeuvring around an oil platform in all types of sea conditions. Learn from realistic situations using operator stations arranged as on the vessel.

  • Winch simulator

Enhanced with a winch remote control and monitoring system, the latest winch configurations helps crew practice and learn how to handle complex winch operations.

  • Seismic simulator

Realistic training on deploying the streamer cable and deflector. Simulating the operator’s tasks on the back deck of a seismic vessel, using the control system together with the radio remote.

Spares

We understand the importance of having the right parts, available in the right place, at the right time.

Spares

We understand the importance of having the right parts, available in the right place, at the right time. Working in close collaboration with our customers we have now developed a Spares Transformation Programme (STP) to further improve our customer response times.

This programme will streamline our operations to reduce lead-times, increase spares availability, and allow customers to track the status of their spares delivery in real-time.

To support the programme, we have opened a dedicated Marine Parts Service Centre (MPSC) to process spares quotations and orders centrally. This is underpinned by an improved logistics and IT infrastructure, which will enable us to deliver high-quality support to our customers, wherever they are in the world.

Hybrid Shaft Generator (HSG)

Allowing for more flexible use of engine and propeller speed variations.

Hybrid Shaft Generator (HSG)

The Hybrid Shaft Generator (HSG) upgrade is a modification to the power electronics system which controls the shaft generator to switchboard power flow.

This means that the diesel engine and the propeller can operate at variable speeds, whilst keeping the network frequency-stable and voltage fixed. With the HSG system the switchboards see a constant voltage and frequency at variable engine rpm. The HSG system upgrade allows for more flexible use of engine and propeller speed variations, so that both propeller and engine efficiencies can be maximised by ensuring that they are running at their most efficient point.

Customer benefits
  • Reduced fuel consumption – Optimised system operation means that engine rpm can be reduced while maintaining the voltage and frequency to the switchboard. This results in considerable potential for fuel savings and NOx/CO2 reduction.
  • Flexible operations – with the Hybrid Shaft Generator upgrade, the shaft generator also acts as an electric motor. As a motor, it can operate alone, or together with the main engine for more power options.
  • Optimised propulsion mode selection – This system has a fast easy mode change capability between generating and motoring for five options: boost mode, diesel electric mode, parallel mode, transit mode and shore connection mode.
  • Longer engine life and reduced maintenance – reduced running hours on auxiliary gen sets, thrusters and electric motors extend their lives and maintenance intervals, lowering operating costs.
  • Increased comfort on board – Lower noise and vibration levels with reduced engine rpm and running hours.
  • System compatibility – Further additional fuel savings can be made when combined with a thruster starter upgrade.
  • Improved redundancy – the propulsion system still operates, even if one engine should fail.
HSG operation modes
  • SAVe Cube
SAVe Cube has all frequency converters, drives and switchboards integrated into a single cabinet to save space and simplify installation. Additional battery power is available for low-speed.
  • SAVe Combi
As its name suggests this system is made up of a variety of building blocks and can be designed to almost any desired systems architecture for operation in a wide variety of modes. One cabinet performs the task of several power functions and drives.
  • SAVe Line
SAVe Line is a traditional diesel-electric propulsion system now operating in more than 130 vessels. It uses Active Front End (AFE) technology for more stable clean voltage and fast response to load control changes.
  • SAVe Safe
The SAVe Safe system has diesel electric propulsion with distributed batteries that provide load smoothing to reduce generator requirements and offer continuous power to thrusters to improve system redundancy.
